The what, why and how of attracting business through blogging

Having a web site is not enough to get visitors to your site. Amongst the many techniques for attracting traffic, blogging is considered to be one of the most effective.

Blogging for business is more than writing a diary. You can use a blog to share your knowledge, report on your experiences within your field, highlight market developments, and share useful and interesting links with your audience.

Blogging is good because it
  • builds your credibility
  • offers fresh content to returning visitors
  • attracts attention from search engines

Blogging can be ineffective if
  • your content says little of interest
  • your content is badly written
  • you don't blog often enough

How do you start?
If you haven't got a blog designed into your web site, then you can use one of the popular free blogging packages that are available online and very easy to use. Try Wordpress or Blogger for example. I have my own blog on my web site as well as this one offering business writing advice. I also take up the offer of blog and article space from organisations such as the UK business and events directory BusinessScene and another local directory TouchLocal. All free of course.

How do you keep going?
Experts advise blogging several times a week to keep search engines and your audience interested. If you haven't got the time or the expertise to produce a well-written, interesting blog, complete with keywords and links back to your web site, consider employing a professional writer. Just google for a copywriter in your area, or try blog writer or business writer. Quoted costs vary but many are willing to negotiate terms with you.

Once you've got one blog going, why not spread out? Blog for specific markets or on specific topics. Search engines don't like to see the same content duplicated across the Internet, but your writer can revise and refresh your content to tailor it to each audience. Link from each blog to your web site and you're raising your profile even further.

Finally, publicise your blog. If you're on Twitter or other social media services, give the latest blog a quick mention. More links, more visitors.
