Writing "advertorials", where you get an article published free (possibly in exchange for paying for advertising), is a really good way of getting your business noticed. You might have editorial in a local paper supplement, or get a story into a magazine where the deal is that you write it yourself.
As an ex-editor myself, I know some of the pitfalls that unpractised contributors face. So here are just five tips for getting published successfully.
1. Before you do anything else, get hold of a copy of the publication you’re writing for. Look for the style of content and writing, and know your audience.
2. Don't offer the same piece to all and sundry. If your first choice turns your idea down, only then go to the next on the list. And if you are published, don't be tempted to celebrate your success by offering exactly the same piece to anyone else. Editors like exclusivity.
3. Write in the right style for the publication. You’ll have got a feel for the way the magazine talks to its readership from that issue you’ve read. Now you talk the same way.
4. Make it as easy as possible for the editor to publish your piece. Read the guidelines and obey them. Keep to the word count. Proofread your article. Deliver it in the right format and with any illustrations also in the requested format.
5. Make your sales pitch gentle. If you’re providing advertorial in exchange for paid-for advertising in the local paper, then a hard sell might be more appropriate. But in an industry journal, say, your article is about emphasising your credibility rather than directly selling your products and services.
And, of course, if you suffer from lack of time or experience to get your articles right, we can help. Visit our web site at www.wrightwell.co.uk to find out more.
